(SHP) is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to end school shootings, and create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. Through its life-saving evidence-informed Know the Signs prevention programs, SHP educates and empowers youth and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others. SHP is a moderate, bipartisan organization that supports sensible policy solutions that address the human side of gun violence and make schools safer.


SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.

About the Role
SHP is looking for a motivated, passionate individual to join its dynamic, fast-paced, and results-driven team. The ideal candidate is flexible, detail-oriented, collaborative, proactive, and a self-starter. As Manager, Grants and Development, you will play a key role in SHP’s Development Team, reporting to the Senior Director, Grants. Your focus will be managing and expanding a strong portfolio of private foundation donors, while also providing top-tier grant writing and management support. Additional duties will include supporting team operations, such as donor acknowledgments, database maintenance, and event coordination. 


Location/Travel
We are a U.S. based organization and most of our staff work remotely. 
This is a hybrid position that requires approximately one half-day per week onsite at SHP’s Newtown Office.  

Job Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to)
  • In collaboration with the Senior Director - Grants, work to expand SHP’s base of private grant-making foundation supporters through aggressive and strategic cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.  
  • Manage a small portfolio of foundation supporters with a focus on understanding and mastering the full grant funding cycle, from identification to renewal.  
  • Draft and collaboratively develop high-quality grant applications/reports that put SHP in the best possible position to secure grant funding.  
  • Ensure timely submission of all grant applications and reports across the Development Team’s portfolios (foundation, corporation, major donor) by managing a calendar of grant deliverables using SHP’s CRM.  
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate foundation records (award letters, meeting notes, correspondences, etc.) in SHP’s CRM and shared drive. 
  • Help to steer the proper management of restricted grants/funding from foundations, corporations, and major donors in collaboration with Finance and other teams. 
  • Proactively research foundation prospects using tools such as Foundation Director Online, GrantWatch, trade publications (i.e. Chronicle of Philanthropy, Inside Philanthropy, etc.), and more.  
  • Assist in the writing and editing of case statements and other fundraising collateral. 
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate and updated materials in the Development Team’s core documents vault, such as budgets, financials, legal docs, Board lists, etc. 
  • Organize and prepare leadership team and other staff for meetings with prospective donors. 
  • Assist and collaborate on other development activities with teammates, including fundraising events, matching gift campaigns, appeals, etc.  
  • Manage the donor acknowledgment process across SHP’s foundation, corporation, and major donor portfolios. This requires being onsite at SHP’s Newtown Office approximately one half-day per week, with some times of year (i.e. year-end) requiring additional time onsite.  
Desired Skills and Experience
  • BA/BS required and a minimum of 3 years of experience in nonprofit development (or related field). 
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills. 
  • Superb written and oral communication skills. 
  • Proficiency with a CRM (SHP uses Salesforce), MS Office, and donor research. 
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to recognize and proactively pursue opportunities and challenges.  
  • Ability to thrive in and contribute to a fast-paced environment. 
  • Experience and ease wearing multiple hats in a highly entrepreneurial and collaborative environment. 
  • Passion for the mission of SHP and a record of collaborative, respectful, and inclusive partnership. 
  • Ability to perform other duties as required. 
Benefits and Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000.
(SHP follows a strict internal rubric to help guide salary placement and ensure equitable pay amongst new hires and current staff. New hires should expect to be brought on at the start of the range, except in extenuating circumstances.)

Our organization operates within a distributed workforce, allowing for location flexibility across the country for most positions. We provide remote office support for all staff, which includes a laptop, home office reimbursement, monthly Wi-Fi reimbursement up to $40, and monthly cell phone reimbursement up to $50.
